We ascend by the legendary CabriO — the world's first open-deck double-decker cable car — a 10-minute ride with the Swiss Alps spread in every direction. On clear days you can see from the Bernese Oberland to the Titlis glacier and far into the horizon beyond.

As the sun drops low over the lagoon, we board our water taxis for the return journey along the Grand Canal. The light turns the ancient palazzos amber and rose, the reflections shimmer, and Venice does what Venice always does — makes you promise yourself you'll come back.
